Now that I have submitted my book, I need a distraction. Time to hop back on the blog and make up for an entire missed month!!!

a

I am very thankful for being tagged for This is My Truth Now  I apologize it has taken me so long to complete it. Thank you Angie!

The Rules

  1. Create your own new post and call it “Tag: This-Is-My-Truth-Now” and be sure to include in your tags the words — without quotes — “ThisIsMyTruthNow Tag”
  2. Include these rules when you copy/paste into your own post.
  3. Be sure to thank the person that tagged you and include their responses at the bottom of your post, so someone can get to know them too. Tell everyone something interesting about the person who tagged you.
  4. Include a link to my original post mentioning this blog so we can see how many people choose to play along. Link to cut/paste is:  BrizzleLass
  5. Choose 12 bloggers to tag and include a link to their latest post, so others can check them out and meet new people.
  6. Answer all 12 questions in The Challenge Questions section, but replace the 12th question with your own new one around telling the truth or revealing something interesting about yourself — you can leave the existing if you can’t think of anything.
  7. Be sure to copy/paste the “Truth or Dare” section at the end of this post. It’s important to the challenge — so you better carefully read it!
  8. If you’ve haven’t been tagged, but you want to play along, you can totally jump on in and post responses to the tag on your blog.

The Challenge Questions

  1. You’re on your way to a birthday dinner that your friends have thrown for you. When you arrive, your favorite author is having dinner by himself or herself and asks you to sit with them, before you even see your friends or they see you. You have two choices: (1) You can sit with the author, but can’t tell your friends that you’ve abandoned them for three hours, or (2) Meet your friends and lose the only chance you’ll ever have to talk with the author. Pick one or the other — no exceptions or communication with your friends to tell them about the author — and explain why.
    • I actually find this situation unrealistic and will break the rules for the better good of all. It’s not fair that my favorite author should not join me for my birthday celebration. Don’t put me in a box. I don’t fit.
  2. You’ve got an opportunity to spend a few hours alone “in your bedroom” with a character from any book you’ve previously read. The character tells you that (s)he would like to lock the door and spend some alone time with you. What book and character is it, and do you decide to enter the room and lock the door, or tell them you aren’t interested?
    • Jon Snow from A Song of Fire and Ice. And the answer is no. I would not lock the door with him because I am a happily married woman. Instead I would make him use my elliptical while he said “Indubitably” and I laughed hysterically.
  3. If you could turn any male character from one of your favorite books into a female character (or change a female into a male) in the book or book series, which one and why?
    • Every Dean Kuntz book, male leads into female leads. The genre needs it.
  4. What blogger currently on your follower’s list (meaning they follow you too) do you admire the most and why?
    • JULES!!! Oh this woman makes me laugh and cry and has the strength of every single mama of such a beautiful and smart young woman. She is also the only person to have taken a burlesque class and wrote to tell the tale
  5. If you could change any one decision your favorite book character made, what would it be and why?
    • Nick Dunne would have really killed that crazy bish… LAWD (Gone Girl)
  6. If you could pick 1 character from a book and 1 character from a TV show you watch (that is NOT based on a book) to be in a relationship together, who would you choose, and why?
    • Ned Stark and Sean Bean’s character in Pixels hahahahaha
  7. It’s your last day on Earth. As you are about to cross that final finish line, a mysterious shadow appears, giving you a choice: (1) You can go move forward to whatever comes next for you [based on your own spiritual or religious beliefs], or (2) you can become a character in a book series and exist permanently doing whatever that author chooses to do with you in the book. Which do you choose, and if it’s option 2, reveal the book and author.
    • Option 1 unless said shadow gave me a chance to read more books to find a happy ending.
  8. If you could steal a pet from someone in any book you’ve read, but had to replace it with a friend’s pet (meaning they wouldn’t ever see their pet again), would you do it?  If so, explain the who and why.
    • I would replace my dad’s tiny whimpy dog with the tiger from The Walking Dead. (Yes this was a (graphic) novel first)
  9. If you could turn someone from your real life into a character from a book, who from your life, who in the book and why?
    • My sister would easily be Emma Bloom in Miss Peregrine’s… She’s a fireball, that girl lol
  10. Post a picture of the cover of a book you read in 2000 and the book you are currently reading now. (Note: if you weren’t alive in 2000, pick the first book you ever read and tell everyone what year it was from).

  1. Your favorite character (under 18) needs a place to stay for 3 months and asks you if (s)he could stay in your spare room (yes, you have one for the sake of this question). Who is it and what is the reason (s)he needs to stay with you?
  • The little girl from The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King, because CPS is investigating her parents for letting that poor baby get lost in the woods.

12  If your life was a book title, what would it be? (Note: This is the question each person can change when they tag their own nominees)

  • Oh Yes She Did

Question for my nominees: . Do you set 1 year, 5 year, 10 year goals? What are they?

Angie’s Answers

  1. You’re on your way to a birthday dinner that your friends have thrown for you. You have two choices: (1) You can sit with the author, but can’t tell your friends that you’ve abandoned them for three hours, or (2) Meet your friends and lose the only chance you’ll ever have to talk with the author. • Sit with the author! My friends would totally understand.
    • Trevor Jackson from Mackenzie’s Distraction  Lock the door!
  3. If you could turn any male character from one of your favorite books into a female character (or change a female into a male) in the book or book series, which one and why?
    • That is a tough one. I can’t think of one I’d switch, but I think I would have liked the book “Follow the River” better if it would have been written by a woman. It was an interesting book, but the main character didn’t have the thoughts that she would’ve had if she would’ve been written by a female.
  4. What blogger currently on your follower’s list (meaning they follow you too) do you admire the most and why?
    • I really don’t like this question, I like all my followers and don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. But if I had to pick just one, I’d have to say Shanannigans at Reads & Reels. I think we would be great friends if we ever met in person. I love reading her reviews. Amy and Chelsea at novelgossip and thesuspenseisthrillingme are two others that I really enjoy reading their reviews.
  5. If you could change any one decision your favorite book character made, what would it be and why?
    • Tris would not have protected her brother in Allegiant.
  6. If you could pick 1 character from a book and 1 character from a TV show you watch (that is NOT based on a book) to be in a relationship together, who would you choose, and why?
    • I hardly ever watch TV shows, so I’m really not sure.
    • I’m going with option 1. But if I went with option 2, I’d be in the Lux series by Jennifer Armentrout!
  8. If you could steal a pet from someone in any book you’ve read, but had to replace it with a friend’s pet (meaning they wouldn’t ever see their pet again), would you do it?  If so, explain the who and why.
    • No, that would just be too cruel.
  9. If you could turn someone from your real life into a character from a book, who from your life, who in the book and why?
    • My daughter Jourdan would be Mackenzie from Mackenzie’s Distraction. Why? Because my daughter did make changes in her life, like Mackenzie. Now we are waiting for her to find her Trevor. LOL  Or my son, Jacob would be Zayne from Roadside. Because my son reminds me of Zayne due to his karate skills and the fact that he wants to be a lawyer.
  10. Post a picture of the cover of a book you read in 2000 and the book you are currently reading now. (Note: if you weren’t alive in 2000, pick the first book you ever read and tell everyone what year it was from).

    • Purple; for so many reasons. I’ve loved the color purple since I was so young that I’d couldn’t say the word properly. I called it something like “purpde” according to my family. It is my go to color for clothes, flowers, almost anything. I just love it. It’s beautiful and makes me smile.

The Generation That Built Us

Having a daughter has completely derailed me. Things that I have kept high on a shelf, have come down to tiny hands that don’t understand the frailty of the memories they hold.

image2

This bunny has a good 25 years on her new owner.

My father being in the military, we rarely lived close to family. When we did go “home” to visit, we stayed with my grandmother; my father’s mother. I only just recently found out my own mother hated it. But my brother, sister and I loved everything about it. The cookie jar that held snack cakes instead of just plain ole cookies, the “haunted barn” we’d explore only supervised by my aunt, who would later in life become my roommate, the smell of coffee and cigarettes at all hours of the day, and Grandma. Her cooking, her gifts, her love, and her pride in us: the grandkids.

image1

Always so proud of us (I’m the bottom left of the main photo.. My cousin is the innocent by-standard. Her blog can be found HERE).

My Grandmother was the face of everything that the subsequent generations wanted to be to their family: the Matriarch. There was not a get together that she was not in the center of. Her cooking alone is enough for its own post.  It was never ever about what she bought us. What she gave us, she made with her own two hands. I am happy that even at a young age, I recognized the prize that was handed to me that Christmas.

Hand sewn bunnies, like the one gifted to me in the first photo, were given to all the granddaughters she had at the time. Many MANY more came later, but as her eye sight went, and her arthritis worsened, fewer things were sewn and less gifts were made.

And now as a mother, I treasure more the things my mother makes for me and my children. I want her to be proud of my children like my grandmother was proud of us. I want my daughter to know the line of strong women that she comes from. I also want her to know the value and worth behind taking a few abstract materials, a little bit of finesse and a lot of love and transforming it into an heirloom; a token of love and life that will transcend her own if treated delicately.

Grandma, thank you for sharing your gifts with us. I hope I do well to teach my kiddos of your diligence, your love and your pride in them. Even my littlest little who did not get to meet you. We love and miss you dearly.

5 Reasons YOU Should Be Crafting (Or Know Someone That Does)

Get your hands dirty

I have always been a quick learner, fairly crafty, and extremely cheap. So when I met my good friend Jasmine of The Jaybird’s Nest, I knew she was my people. Through the years she has taught me some very valuable things. Not only that, but she helps me raise my kids. For this, I am indebted to her forever. lol So let me tell you some fun things she has taught me about crafting.

  1. It’s a marketable skill. If you decide you are done working and ready to “stick it to the man”, you have a means by which to support yourself. Now I’m not a HUGE dooms day prepper, but let’s face it, if you can make things then you can trade things. People need clothes. If you can crochet, knit, or sew then BAM, you’re a valuable asset.
  1. Signs, Signs, and more SIGNS!!! Nothing boosts your mood like a well-placed snarky sign. The possibilities are endless. Christmas, Halloween, even spring!! They make me happy, they make you happy. Everyone needs more happy. PLUS you save a bazillion dollars on decorating your home. Find some ugly furniture with good bones at a yard sale, and wha-la! You can transform it to match your décor without dropping a few hundred dollars at ikea.

  1. OMG kids are much cuter in something that was custom made for them. This should actually be its own post. I am fighting the urge to just not leave an explanation and flood the rest of this with adorable pictures of children and homemade stuffs.

My Little Miss. Her shirt, the sheet, and the frame were made by The Jaybird’s Nest.

  1. Cheaper than therapy- Plus emotions BLECK! There is something about finishing a project that really teaches you a lot about yourself. Whether that “finish” means you return it to the trash where you got it, or it ends up as the beautiful piece you envisioned all along, you learn how much patience you have, how much coffee you can consume, and how long you can actually ignore your children whining about “She’s touching meeeee” Seriously, she can’t even crawl. Just scoot 5 more inches and you are safe from your octopus-banshee sister. Sheesh!

16587286_10154749371120932_1263546955200930965_o

  1. Supporting small business. For some crafters, your support could help them buy yet another pair of cleats because the ones they bought last week no longer fit. For others (like me) it saved me money on having to BUY you a Christmas present so that I could buy my guy another Stay Puft Marshmellow Man because he lost his at the doctor’s office.

The Jaybird’s Nest “After”

I make things because I have a driving need to be creative as most crafters do. It is a healthy outlet, plus power tools make me feel… Powerful? lol And when that one project turns out so good, you want everyone to see it when they come over, there is nothing like that feeling of accomplishment. Or you could just be happy you finished something before starting a fifth project.

I did this yesterday. It was the cushioned backing of an UGLY bench. Now it’s a beautiful photo board 😀

I asked my mister yesterday (while I was painting in the kitchen and MAYBE i got a little paint on the counter) if he was annoyed with my crafting. He said no, not at all, but he just wishes that I would finish my projects before starting them so I don’t have a dresser hanging out in the garage, taking up space for a couple of years before I ultimately abandon it anyway. But hey, you win some, you lose some.

Why do you craft???

Character Play Lists

One of my favorite blogs belong to a gentleman and published author named Jim. He regularly posts his “From My Writing Play List” and I find it fun and interesting to see what other writers us as a muse for their work. This particular gentleman is a self proclaimed metal head and is directly reflected in his frequent posts. I do not share this affection for metal, but he describes what he would write while listening to the posted song. I try to place myself in this mindset for my own inspiration purposes. It is a fun exercise.

Since picking up on my novel this month for the March 10,000 challenge, I have reconnected with the characters that I have created. As I write this book, it pans out as a movie in my head. The setting of the story actually occurs where I live so I can literally SEE it everyday on my way to work. This alone has kept the story ignited and alive in my life. My morning commute reminds me of there they are and where they need to go.

Okay, to the point… This morning on my commute I noticed how, with every song that come on the radio, I think of two things:

  1. Where could this song fit into the movie version of my story.

Or

2. Of the characters in the story, who would have this song on their playlist

I am positive this is far more fun for me than anyone else that has been involved (helped beta-read) in my story. And I do this with far more things in different aspects in my mind. I regular commentate or narrate my own life, sometimes the life of others. When I get ready for work, I imagine I am doing make up tutorials for exhausted working moms. I make funny jokes to myself that I try to find ways to work into conversations, often repeating them throughout the day. I think this is just a product of my literary brain. Yes I am weird and strange, but you would not have known otherwise had I not just told you. 😉

This picture I pinned on Pinterest  is what I imagine Hyka, one of the main characters, looks like.

hyka

Her personality i took from the Myers Briggs INTJ and a character on a comedy “Brooklyn 99” with Andy Sandberg. Despite her stoic demeanor, she is actually the comedic relief.

Anywho, have a great day everyone!

Six Fact Sunday

So it’s Saturday, but most will wake up to this post so here it goes.

In March I will begin a very intense writing challenge which will limit my time here with you all. So the compromise is that I will aim at doing one very structured post.

Since this is the first, this week will simply be about me. Six things you probably do not already know about me.

  1. I can say “Hello. How are you. I am good. I am tired.” in six different languages. Enough to make a person otherwise isolated smile at my attempt at relating. These six languages include English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, and Swahili (my personal favorite). The funny thing is, if you have watched the movie Lion King, you know far more Swahili than you think. Simba= Lion. Rafiki= Monkey. Hakunah Matata really means “No worries”. lol Isn’t that fun?!!? In the hospital where I work, there are many African immagrants and they typically speak French or Swahili. When you say hello in their native language their faces light up. It’s so fun.
  2. I once turned in a human jaw bone belonging to a 200 year old Native American man to the coroner’s office. This is a looong story for another time.
  3. I once physically took two children from their home and placed them into protective custody. This is a sad and frustrating story of a young woman mentally unfit to care for her own kids. I would not be in the least bit surprised if they never made back to her. Sweetest kids ever and I was 6 months pregnant and managed to hold it together. Ugh.
  4. I once served someone divorce papers. Very awkward, but he was expecting them.
  5. I have only been a writer for two years. This is how long I have been working on my current novel. I get stuck on character interactions in difficult situations.
  6. Coffee means sooooo much to me. I can go without it, but there is a sense of calm and security it brings me that If it came down to my health or coffee, I would have to make a few compromises.  Sometimes I drink decaf if I get a late night craving because it is far more about the taste and experience than the caffeine involve. I would just consider that a perk at this point.

So now you know a little about me. Want more 6 facts? What subjects would you like to see? Later posts might include:

“Six Facts About Civilian Life After the Military”

“Six Facts About Solo Parenting”

“Six Facts About Sleep Deprivation”

Lawd I think I have my month planned out. Cheers!!
